The Government has published its response to the Farming Profitability Review, alongside a new long‑term Farming Roadmap setting out how agricultural policy will evolve over the coming years. The announcements offer long‑awaited clarity for farmers, advisers and rural businesses, signalling a renewed focus on profitability, fairer supply chains and targeted investment in innovation across UK agriculture.
As part of the announcement, the Government has committed an additional £53 million to farming innovation, aimed at helping businesses adopt new technologies and approaches to improve efficiency, resilience and long‑term sustainability. For many farm businesses, this investment may open the door to new opportunities previously out of reach due to cost or complexity.
Jack Deal, Partner at Scrutton Bland and Sumer’s lead for Agriculture in the South of the UK, commented: “The Government’s response marks an important step forward for the sector. Farmers are facing challenges from all angles and have been calling for clearer direction, fairer supply chains and meaningful support to improve profitability. The additional £53 million for innovation is a positive signal it recognises the need for investment in technology, data and modern farming practices.
What matters now is ensuring farmers can access this support easily and that the roadmap delivers practical benefits on the ground. The Government has set out their stall and we encourage businesses to review their plans, explore opportunities for collaboration and consider where innovation could strengthen performance in the years ahead.”
While many of the policy details will continue to develop, several key themes are already emerging:
- Greater emphasis on performance, data and efficiency.
- More opportunities for collaboration across the sector.
- Potential for investment and diversification as barriers are reduced.
Taken together, these changes highlight the importance of reviewing business plans and considering where there may be opportunities to improve performance or access new forms of support.
