From redundancy to award-winning business: Meet the Shropshire entrepreneur bringing order to small business admin

A Shropshire entrepreneur who launched her business after redundancy is helping self-employed people reclaim their time, drawing on two decades of administrative experience and a practical understanding of working differently.

Vicki Wilson, from Weston Rhyn near Oswestry, founded Vicki Admin Fairy® in February 2021 after her 20-year career with HMRC ended in redundancy.

More than five years later, she has built an award-winning virtual assistant business supporting small business owners with the essential work that keeps their businesses running, but so often eats into evenings, weekends and family time.

From managing overflowing inboxes and chasing unpaid invoices to organising spreadsheets, updating websites and supporting social media, Vicki helps clients get their administration under control and make room for the work they enjoy.

For Vicki, who has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, building a business has also meant creating a working life shaped around her skills, ambitions and the way she works best.

She said: “When you’re self-employed, you can find yourself doing everything. You’re delivering the service, answering emails, sending invoices and trying to remember what you’ve forgotten. Before you know it, the admin has taken over your evening again.

“I love the jobs that other business owners put off. Give me an inbox that needs sorting or a spreadsheet that needs making sense of, and I’m happy. Knowing that someone can finish work with a clearer head because I’ve taken those jobs off their hands is what makes it worthwhile.”

Vicki works with a range of small businesses, including disabled and neurodivergent entrepreneurs. Her approach centres on understanding each client, adapting to how they work and providing dependable support without judgement.

She said: “People sometimes feel embarrassed about asking for help because they think they should be able to manage everything themselves. There’s no need to apologise to me for an untidy inbox or a pile of outstanding admin. We start where you are and work through it together.”

Her achievements include winning the Inspiring Journey award at the 2025 Woman Who Achieves Awards and receiving recognition through entrepreneur Theo Paphitis’s Small Business Sunday initiative.

Alongside her client work, Vicki has written practical books for virtual assistants and self-employed people, covering business confidence, day-to-day challenges and protecting a brand. She also supports other business owners through mentoring and her role as Peer Support Advisor for Disabled VAs with the Society of Virtual Assistants.

A recent addition to her client work is providing administrative support for Clwyd Special Riding Centre, a place with a personal connection stretching back to her first Riding for the Disabled sessions in 1982.

Vicki said: “Redundancy meant having to rethink what came next. I had years of experience, plenty to offer and a determination to build something of my own.

“My disability is part of my life, but it doesn’t decide what I can contribute or what I can aim for. Vicki Admin Fairy is built on what I’m good at: helping people, solving problems and making the working day a little easier.”

Her forthcoming memoir, Disability Is My Strength, will be released on 5 November 2026, with a launch at Stori Brymbo in Wrexham. It explores the life and experiences behind the business, and her determination to build a life on her own terms.
