Birmingham college leading the way for development for teachers

In an educational landscape where pressure is mounting around teacher recruitment, retention, results, there has never been a more important time to invest in staff development. Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College has announced this week that it has been awarded the prestigious CPD Quality Silver Award by the Teacher Development Trust, proving its dedication to nurturing not only student talent, but striving to support its teachers in its professional careers.

Joseph Chamberlain is continuing to demonstrate its status as the only college in Birmingham and Solihull rated ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED by adding this impressive gong to its trophy cabinet. The CPD Quality Silver Award saw the college go through a rigorous audit, with the college’s current CPD programmes and training put through its paces. The audit is designed to help schools and colleges understand how to improve the effectiveness of its in-house approach.

The award is given by the Teacher Development Trust, an organisation founded by teachers that aims to raise awareness of the importance of CPD by building tools to help teachers transform their practice and supporting schools to achieve success for their pupils.

Speaking about the award, Principal Tony Day comments: “Effective professional development for teachers is a core part of securing effective teaching. Our students need us to be as reflective and as focused on learning as we ask them to be so it’s vital that we support teachers within their own professional development. We are thrilled that we have been awarded the CPD Quality Award. We aim to motivate our teachers in order to maintain the most important part of the job; their enthusiasm teaching.”

Situated just 10 minutes from Birmingham city centre, the Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College offers a wide range of A-level and BTEC courses for school leavers, as well as Adult Learning and Higher Education programmes. The college is the only college in Birmingham and Solihull rated ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED. It boasts a 99.4% A-level pass rate, with its 2019 results being the highest in the college’s history; and 99% of its BTEC students successfully passing their qualifications.:
