Melanie Brown, founder of Mel’s Little Luxuries, celebrates three business recognitions in 2026 after her daughter’s childhood eczema struggles inspired her to build a purpose-led skincare business.
Melanie left her career as a lawyer after her baby daughter’s struggles with eczema inspired her to explore natural skincare. She has celebrated an extraordinary year of business success, winning two business awards just seven days apart.
Named as winner of the Health, Beauty and Wellness Award at the 2026 Female Business Awards in Manchester on 15 October and then just one week later, on 22 October, she received another award at the New Earth Business Awards in Coventry, winning the Product Based Spiritual Business category.
The double celebration follows an earlier achievement in 2026, when Melanie was recognised as a Theo Paphitis Small Business Sunday (#SBS) winner.
For Melanie, these achievements represent far more than business success. They are recognition of a journey that began with a mother’s determination to help her daughter feel comfortable in her own skin.
From a Mother’s Worry to a Business with Purpose
The inspiration behind Mel’s Little Luxuries began when Melanie’s daughter developed severe eczema as a baby.
Despite trying prescribed treatments and various skincare products, Melanie struggled to find anything that seemed to bring her daughter lasting comfort.
Her daughter was struggling to sleep and eat, was losing weight and was no longer smiling as she once had.
Watching her baby experience such discomfort was heartbreaking, and Melanie felt helpless.
Recalling that difficult time, Melanie said: “I remember feeling so helpless because nothing I was trying seemed to be helping my daughter. She wasn’t sleeping properly, she wasn’t eating, and seeing her lose that little smile was incredibly difficult.
“All I wanted was to find something that could help her feel comfortable again.”
Determined to explore other possibilities, Melanie began researching natural ingredients, plants and botanicals and learning how they could be incorporated into skincare formulations.
Her search eventually led her to a woman in the north of England who taught her how to formulate skincare products from scratch.
For the first time, Melanie could carefully select and understand the ingredients she was using.
As she began incorporating her handmade formulations into her daughter’s skincare routine, Melanie noticed that her daughter appeared more comfortable.
“The moment I saw my daughter smiling again was everything to me. It was such a relief to see her becoming more comfortable in her skin.
“That experience changed the direction of my life. What started as a mother’s determination to help her daughter became something I wanted to share with others.”
Friends who had followed Melanie’s journey began asking her to make products for them, and she started creating handmade gift packages.
Those early requests eventually grew into Mel’s Little Luxuries.
Now a certified skincare formulator, Melanie creates natural handmade body care products with sensitive skin in mind. Her business is rooted in three values: honesty, kindness and caring.
As the business developed, so did its purpose.
Melanie recognised that many busy women spend their days looking after everyone else, often feeling guilty about taking even a few moments for themselves.
Today, alongside her handmade body care products, she runs wellbeing classes encouraging women to find small pockets of time for intentional self-care.
Her message is simple: women shouldn’t have to seek permission to care for themselves.
“I know how easy it is to put everyone else’s needs before your own, especially when you’re a mum and you’re juggling so many responsibilities.
“I want women to understand that self care doesn’t have to mean spending hours away from their families or responsibilities. Sometimes it’s about finding those little moments in your day that belong just to you.
“You don’t need to feel guilty, and you certainly don’t need anyone’s permission.”
Hazel Woodward-Foley, co-founder of the Female Business Awards, said: “Our judging panel assessed every nominee on their marketing activity, client testimonials, innovation, and their passion for their industry and clients. This year’s finalists showed exceptional standards of service, client satisfaction and business impact. Being named a Winner is a clear sign of the positive difference Melanie is making in her industry.”
For Melanie, being named winner of the Health, Beauty and Wellness Award was an emotional milestone.
“To receive this award means so much because I know where this journey began. I never set out to build an award-winning business. I was simply a mum trying to find a way to help my little girl.
“To now have my work recognised in the health, beauty and wellness industry is something I’m incredibly proud of.”
Helping More Women Make Time for Themselves
Looking ahead, Melanie hopes to introduce Mel’s Little Luxuries to more people across Solihull, the West Midlands and beyond.
She also wants to continue encouraging women to make their wellbeing a priority through her handmade products and wellbeing classes.
“These awards are wonderful, and I’m incredibly grateful, but what matters most to me is knowing that something which began as a way of helping my daughter has grown into a business that can make a difference to other people.
“If I can encourage just one woman to stop feeling guilty about taking time for herself, or help someone discover a more enjoyable body care routine, then that means everything.
“I’m proud of how far Mel’s Little Luxuries has come, and I’m excited about what comes next.”
