Changes you can make to increase your self-care in 2021

Prolonged sun exposure without using SPF

For many of us, 2020 was a stressful year in so many ways.

But as things look more positive globally, why not make 2021 the year you become more positive about yourself? Perhaps now is the time to care about yourself more, making you the priority and setting yourself goals to provide better direction and improve your health and wellbeing.

Diet changes

Following a healthy eating plan will cut out the foods that have a negative impact on your body and will also keep your mind more alert. You don’t necessarily need to make wholesale changes – for instance, you won’t have to stop eating junk food altogether. It’s just about eating in moderation and increasing your intake of fruit (rather than sweet treats), vegetables, fatty fish and nuts. If you’re really unhappy with areas of your appearance, and changing this naturally is extremely difficult, then surgery might be an option to improve your confidence.

Lifestyle changes

You might find you’ve slipped into bad habits that can have a negative impact on your skin. The good news is there are ways of overcoming all of these, so you become radiant and feel better about yourself.

According to experts at Transform Hospital Group, lack of sleep and dehydration can give you under-eye bags and prevents your skin from repairing itself, so make sure you get to bed earlier and reduce screen time beforehand to allow a full eight hours of shut-eye. Hydration through drinking plenty of water and moisturising regularly is also essential to prevent dry skin. This is also easily fixed by reducing your caffeine or alcohol intake as well as drinking water. Finally, don’t exfoliate your skin too often, or pick at healing spots, as both of these can also damage your skin.

An underestimated bad habit is sun exposure without good SPF protection. UV rays can cause premature ageing and SPF really needs to be worn year-round. If you want a glowing golden colour, then fake tans and bronzers are far more preferable to sunbeds as you are not taking the risk of sun damage. Smoking is also terrible for your skin, along with impacting many other areas of your health. If you have thought about quitting, trying different methods, and if one method fails, trying again is key to not giving up. Making any of these changes will improve your life and make you feel much better about yourself.

Improve your self-development

Note down the ways in which you can better yourself. It might be reading a book, taking an online course, having a go at a new hobby you’ve always wanted to try, or learning a new skill. Setting out to do something, then achieving it, works wonders for your self esteem and sense of fulfilment.

Focus on friends you may have lost touch with during the pandemic, on making sure you’re getting enough rest, on spending more time outdoors, and on getting good exercise. You might find taking up mindfulness or yoga to be a great way to relax the mind and strengthen the body.

You don’t have to be the best to feel good. Often, it’s just about gradual changes that can make the world of difference to how you look and feel.
