A practice which started life in the back room of a chemists more than 60 years ago before becoming one of Scotland’s leading optometrists has joined Hakim Group.
McPherson Optometry has become the latest high-profile independent to join Hakim Group’s growing family of independent practices and will benefit from the expert support provided by the group.
The Aberdeen-based company was founded in 1960 by Charles McPherson. Sons Stephen and Malcolm now run the practice, with a growing team of 15 employees.
Always at the forefront of innovation, in 1990 the practice became the first in the UK to have a digital retinal camera, taking delivery of the device a week before the local hospital had the same technology.
Following an extensive refit in 2011, the practice boasts the latest technology to maintain and improve eye health, including state-of-the-art equipment, collectively dealing with ultra-thin lightweight spectacles through to complex contact lenses and treatments.
Stephen McPherson said: “We believe that an independent practice has a responsibility for every patient we see and that we treat everyone as we would like to be treated ourselves; this comes from the practice’s beginnings. We are proud to be a family business with our history going back 60 years and two generations of opticians.”
McPherson Optometry becomes the latest in a long line of well-regarded independents to join Hakim Group and it is hoped the move will see the company flourish for decades to come.
Malcolm McPherson added: “To help ensure a bright and positive future for McPherson Optometry we need to continue to grow the practice for the next generation.
“That involves transferring more of our patient care to up-and-coming optometrists while maintaining the ethos of excellent customer service from skilled, effective professionals that has worked so well for the practice for such a long time.
“We look forward to working in partnership with the experienced team at Hakim Group to realise those ambitions and provide our patients with the best possible eyecare for many years to come.”
Hakim Group offers practitioners the ability to run their own business with the freedom normally enjoyed by independents, while simultaneously providing them with the rigour and back-office support that can give larger businesses a competitive edge.
Luke Wren, Head of Business Development at Hakim Group, said: “McPherson Optometry’s commitment to providing exceptional service to its customers for more than 60 years has quite rightly earned them the trust and respect of their local community as well as the wider industry.
“As a practice committed to the development and education of its workforce, we look forward to helping ensure the next chapter in McPherson Optometry’s continued progress is equally successful.”
Hakim Group is the platinum sponsor for this year’s Scottish Optical Conference, to be held in Glasgow on Sunday, November 20.
