Pupils at a Telford school have been presented with prizes as part of a competition run by a construction firm which is building an extension on the site.

SWG Construction is building a new classroom at St George’s School, and managers swapped the building site for the school assembly just before the end of term to present prizes to the winners.

Pupils were asked to draw pictures which either told the story of the new building, or showed important safety messages about construction sites.

Shaun Humphries, senior contracts manager at SWG, said the children had been fascinated by the building work.

“I think a lot of them have enjoyed watching the progress of the build, particularly now the roof is going on,” he said.

“A vital part of the project has been to ensure that the construction has not disturbed the school during the day, and we have made a big effort to make sure that noise and disruption has been kept to a minimum.

“We wanted to do a competition to give a little something back to the school, so we asked pupils to draw a poster showing the new building, along with a message about how to stay safe on construction sites.

“All of the entries were fabulous, and it was extremely hard to narrow them down to four winners, who each received book vouchers.”

Headteacher at St George’s School, Shaun Tyas, said it was perfect timing for SWG Construction to be part of the assembly.

He said: “It was great for them to join us, especially as some pupils were presenting their work from a recent engineering workshop they had attended where they had to build bridges and do other experiments.

“It was a great opportunity for the pupils to link their learning with a real-life example of engineering and construction which has been taking place at their own school.”
