With over 80 years of history, The Ice Cream Alliance’s annual prestigious ice cream awards is a highlight of the year, known for its rigorous judging process and the recognition of the highest standards and innovations in the ice cream sector.

When it comes to classic flavours like vanilla, standing out from the competition is no easy feat. Yet this year, Scotland-based James Rizza & Sons Ltd claimed victory with a vanilla ice cream that set the gold standard.

Donald Morrison, the 4th generation of the family to lead the business, said, “To win this award means so much to me and my family business. It has been an accolade that my father won back in 1997, so for Rizzas to win this, we are both along with all our hardworking staff delighted with the award.”

In 1907, brothers Domenico and James Rizza emigrated from Italy to Scotland, and eventually opened their first confectionary shop in Keith.

A century later Rizza’s has become a household name in Scotland. With an ice cream factory based in Huntly, the family now make ice cream for the masses to enjoy, while still maintaining the high-quality Italian recipe ice creams and sorbets using local dairies and a century of perfecting recipes.

On the future of the business, Donald said, “The exposure we will gain from winning this award has the potential to open many doors for the company and we look forward to what the future holds. Everyone stocks Vanilla and to say it’s the best in not just Scotland but the UK in the open class is fantastic for us all.”

As a pillar of the dynamic ice cream industry, the Ice Cream Alliance continues to foster innovation and creativity, supporting ice cream makers across the nation and ensuring a bright and delicious future for everyone.
