After two unprecedented years, the city of Birmingham came together on the 27thNovember to celebrate the resilience and gusto our great city has shown since the pandemic started.
Ed James was back as host to a room of 600 guests, creating an electric atmosphere as old and new connections came together to celebrate after two long years. The Awards this year were supported by headline sponsor Aston University, alongside Diamond sponsors Bootcamp Media & Pathway Group, who have both stepped up this year from supporting sponsors.
The positivity and inspiration in the room recognised individuals, organisations and most importantly the diversity of our great city. Everyone from the winners to the entertainment were a melting pot of how inclusive Birmingham really is.
During the interval the dance act performed by Eloquent Praise & Empowerment Dance Company, an all-black dance group who topped off their performance with a bit of Bhangra! The amazing live band, Candy & the Sound and after party vibes with the eclectic Nuvibe Entertainment bringing the best of dance, R&B and Hip Hop.
Some highlights were recognising the efforts of those who made an impact to the community during the pandemic. Special mentions to Anjam Nassar winner of the Frontline Worker Award, Brummie of the Year was awarded to Prof. Paul Cadman. Paul has used his platform and his charitable personality to make a positive impact on our city. He resonates with the spirit of our city, to make Birmingham a better place. The lifetime achievement award, this year went to the iconic Gary Newbon MBE for his decades of service to the region.
There was a moment of reflection honouring those who have left us. After a heart felt speech with the Founders of the Birmingham Awards, Ifraz Ahmed and Anita Chumber presenting the Special Recognition Award in honour of Nazir Awan. Nazir, who unfortunately passed away in 2020 due to COVID was given a standing ovation as his family collected the award, it was an emotional moment shared as a collective.
The Founders and organisers Anita Chumber and Ifraz Ahmed said: “When we first began our journey in the event space, organising award ceremonies, we wanted to make a difference to people’s lives by recognising individuals and organisations that positively impact our communities. Seeing everyone’s social media posts has been incredibly overwhelming, endorsing our vision to create an inclusive and diverse ceremony continues to be achieved. We still have a lot more work to do to ensure that the cities hidden gems are recognised and appreciated via our platform.”
The night wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the city, businesses and individuals to get this event back on this year. Particularly the supporting sponsors which include; Birmingham City University, Oxbridge, Douglas Wright T/A McDonald’s, Hollywood Monster, Elonex, MotorServ UK, PureSan, South * City College Birmingham & Swallow drinks who provided the drinks on the tables. The last big event of 2021, it truly was a great way to celebrate the year and in style. It was a magical evening, which showcased who we are as a city and the incredible heart and soul of the people who make the city what it is.
The Birmingham Awards are now in the 6th year going from strength to strength in these unprecedented times.
When we first began our journey in the event space, organising award ceremonies, we wanted to make a difference to peoples lives by recognising individuals and organisations that positively impact our communities. Seeing everyone’s posts has been incredibly overwhelming knowing that endorsing our vision to create an inclusive and diverse ceremony continues to be achieved. We still have a lot more work to do to ensure that the cities hidden gems are recognised and appreciate via our platform.
It was a honour to present our special recognition award to Nazar Awan who was a pillar of the business community. Nazir Awan was someone who supported others with a smile on face and a open heart. He will always remain in our hearts as a giving individual.

This years theme was resilience and recognising those who have risked their lives during these unprecedented times. We Thank our frontline workers and teachers while we continuing to support and appreciate all their amazing work they do every day.
We aim to create a diverse and inclusive award ceremony and this was truly reflected with our winners and everyone in the room. We came together to celebrate not only Birmingham but each other. Coming together and being able to embrace each other after almost 2 years since our last ceremony created an electric atmosphere giving a great sense of pride of being part of such a resilient community.
The Birmingham awards are a true celebration of our great city, for the the people & organisations of Birmingham. We are merely caretakers of Birmingham Awards & hope we are doing the city proud.
