Regional construction contractor Stepnell, has been appointed to build Lidl’s new multimillion pound supermarket in Bedford.
Stepnell’s construction team has just begun work on the nine-month programme to create the 2,206 sq m supermarket in a retail and commercial area in Goldington Road, on the eastern edge of the town.
The purpose-built new store – Lidl’s third in the town – is set to create up to 40 new jobs for local residents.
The single-storey contemporary building features a steel-frame construction with a large glazed frontage facing the new car park which will have 126 free car parking spaces. The modern store interior will feature wide aisles and an on-site bakery. Also included within the development is a 555 sqm warehouse area.
Stepnell was chosen for the scheme following the company’s successful delivery of new stores for Lidl at King’s Heath, Birmingham, and at Oakham, Rutland, through separate contracts.

The new Bedford foodstore has been designed to achieve high sustainability standards and will meet the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard for sustainability performance.
