Schoolchildren in Nottinghamshire were given a unique glimpse into the history of their village, when archaeologists showed them Roman artefacts discovered under a local field.
Pupils at Sutton Bonington Primary School were able to see Roman pottery and coins found at the site of Lime Gardens, the new housing development by William Davis Homes.
The discovery was made during an excavation by archaeologists before construction work began. Experts from York Archaeology had been commissioned by William Davis Homes to conduct an archaeological evaluation of the site.
As well as showing the artefacts to the pupils, York Archaeology held a series of workshops at the school to help the children learn more about local history.
The school’s headteacher, Paul Allen, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to learn more about our village’s incredible history. They really enjoyed finding out about the items which were discovered during the excavation. It certainly helped to bring history to life in a way I’m sure they will never forget.”
William Davis Homes Group Sales and Marketing Director, Michele Rose, commented: “York Archaeology did an excellent job in excavating the site before we began construction work on our sought-after Lime Gardens development.
“It was wonderful to see the children learn more about the history beneath their feet. They clearly enjoyed seeing these special items close-up and finding out more about where they came from.”
A separate information event was held by York Archaeology in Sutton Bonington Village Hall to show the Roman artefacts, including building materials, to the public.
Lime Gardens is William Davis Homes’ most eco-friendly development. All 70 properties have a strong focus on energy saving and the environment.
The homes have enhanced standards of floor, wall and roof insulation. They also feature solar panels (photovoltaic cells), EV charging points and the highest Energy Performance Certificate ‘A’ rating for efficiency, meaning lower carbon emissions and smaller energy bills.
