National Express has been awarded the highest safety award in the UK – the Sword of Honour – by the British Safety Council.
The Birmingham-based company has won two Swords this year – for its national white coach operation and for National Express West Midlands buses. It’s the fourth year in a row that the coach division has won this prestigious award, and the third consecutive year for the buses.
This year, only 61 companies in the world received Swords of Honour from the British Safety Council.
Managing Director National Express UK, Tom Stables, said: “At National Express, we believe that safety is everyone’s business, so I’m very proud that the hard work done by every single one of our employees has been publicly recognised like this.”
The British Safety Council describes the Sword as “the pinnacle of achievement in the world of health and safety management”. Only companies that have been awarded five stars by the BSC in a gruelling 13-day audit can even apply for the honour, which recognises commitments to excellent health and safety management standards.

“This year’s result has proven that there is a world-wide recognition of the belief that no-one should be injured or made ill at work. ‘The best of the best’ performers in health, safety or environmental management, who won the 2018 Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour awards, are leading the global efforts to make all workplaces safe, healthy and sustainable.”
