MM Packaging Deeside has enhanced its innovative GreenPeel fibre-based food tray with the introduction of a new double-rim structure, delivering improved strength, seal integrity and retail performance for fresh protein applications.
The development builds on the success of GreenPeel, MM Packaging’s sustainable food packaging solution, which uses up to 90% less plastic than conventional plastic trays while maintaining the performance required by food manufacturers and retailers. The tray is designed for applications including meat, fish, chilled meals and fresh produce.
The new design replaces the previous single-rim construction with a continuous double-rim structure around the tray. Developed in response to customer demand within the protein sector, the enhanced format provides additional robustness when used with skin-sealed products, helping maintain seal integrity throughout the supply chain.
To deliver the improvement, MM Packaging modified both its machinery and tooling. The first application is a new 20mm tray designed specifically for fresh protein products, with the format designed in collaboration with a major poultry producer in France. The enhanced tray is currently available for protein applications, with wider implementation across the GreenPeel range planned.
Jonathan Craddock, UK Business Development Manager for GreenPeel at MM Packaging Deeside, said: “The move to a double-rim structure is a significant step forward for GreenPeel. Customers want a stronger, more robust solution capable of maintaining a reliable skin seal throughout storage, distribution and retail display.
“By introducing the double rim, we’ve strengthened the tray without compromising any of the sustainability or branding benefits that GreenPeel already provides. It offers greater durability, particularly in demanding retail environments, while continuing to help food manufacturers reduce their reliance on plastic.”
GreenPeel’s cartonboard construction and removable liner continue to provide strong sustainability credentials, helping brands meet plastic-reduction targets while maintaining product protection, shelf appeal and recycling compatibility.
Dave Whitworth, Managing Director at MM Packaging Deeside, added: “Innovation has always been central to our approach, and this latest enhancement demonstrates our commitment to continually improving GreenPeel in response to market requirements. We’re helping food manufacturers make meaningful progress towards their sustainability objectives without sacrificing quality or functionality.”
