Maxine goes sober for October to boost Macmillan Cancer Support

Maxine Smith took part in the Go Sober For October campaign to raise cash for Macmillan

Dains Accountants employee Maxine Smith went alcohol free for a month to raise over £1400 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Business Development Supervisor took part in the ‘Go Sober for October’ campaign to say thanks for the care her father received during his battle with cancer.

Maxine was supported in her fundraising quest by her friends, family and work colleagues at the Dains offices in Burton, Derby, Lichfield, Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent.

The ‘Go Sober For October’ campaign was organised by Macmillan Cancer Support and encouraged people to give up alcohol for the 31 days in October to raise vital funds.

To help with the fundraising appeal, Macmillan partnered with fruit juice company Appletiser who created some delicious ‘mocktail’ recipes using fruit juices for fundraisers to follow.

Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the UK’s largest charities and provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people and their families affected by cancer.

Now Maxine has raised a total of £1,418 for Macmillan Cancer Support from her sponsored fundraising effort.

Maxine, who is based at the Dains Burton office, said: “My dad was supported by a Macmillan nurse during his illness before he passed away and the care he received was phenomenal.

“I wanted to do something to say thanks to Macmillan and decided to join in with the national ‘Go Sober For October’ campaign.

“The work that Macmillan Cancer support do is amazing and I just wanted to show my appreciation for all that they did for my dad and our family.”

The money that Macmillan Cancer support raises can make a vital difference to people living with cancer.

Just £50 can pay for a Macmillan Support worker for three hours, helping people to receive the support they need.

Donations of £300 can pay for two Macmillan grants that would make a significant contribution to a person’s travel to hospital for cancer treatment.

Maxine added: ’I’d like to say a big thank-you to everyone who sponsored me and I’m really pleased to raise this amount of money for such a fantastic cause.”
