Life saving equipment installed at community hall in Newtown

Life saving equipment has been installed at a community hall in Newtown.

A defibrillator has been installed at Treowen Community Hall, a project which has seen the whole neighbourhood come together.

The AED defibrillator and AED heated cabinet had been donated to the former headteacher of Ysgol Treowen Primary school, but it was thought the community hall, with 24 hour access, would be a better location for it.

It has now been installed by electricians from SWG M&E free of charge and money is being raised for its upkeep.

Chairperson of Treowen Community Hall Cheryl Jarman said: “The management committee are so grateful to SWG as the electrician costs were a saving and will mean we can invest in purchasing AED replacement pads.

“To have this resource in our community is invaluable as heart disease is a major cause of death and if we can help to save a life by having this AED defibrillator available in our community it is worthwhile, our hashtag is #tyfytreowensafercommunities.”

Mrs Jarman raised the need for the equipment when she took over the role in October.

She asked SWG for help with installation because the company had done a lot of work in Treowen and recently refurbished flats near to the hall.

Nick Roberts, an electrician from SWG Group, said he was pleased to be able to help.

“This is a small but vital job and will make a huge difference to the area,” he said.

“SWG has done a lot of work in Newtown and across North Powys so it is great to help out the communities that we live and work in.

“With every project we do, we try to benefit the community in some way, but here we were delighted to be approached directly as people knew we would be able and willing to help.”

Calon Hearts Charity gave £100 towards the cost of purchasing the protective cabinet and a go fund me page has now been set up for purchasing replacement pads for the defibrillator, when needed.

Councillor Joy Jones added: “This is a very important piece of equipment that will be available for anyone who needs access to a defibrillator in an emergency.

“I would like to thank the Treowen Hall Committee for all their work and dedication to put this in a prime location on the estate, Treowen school who kindly donated the defibrillator so that it can be accessed by the whole community and surrounding area and I am extremely grateful to SWG.

“It is always great when the whole community works together for the good and the benefit of the whole area.”
