The hospice behind the Worcester Stands Tall sculpture trail has launched an appeal to raise enough money to bid for a giraffe at auction.

St Richard’s Hospice, based in Worcester, needs to raise £5,000 to be in with a chance of successfully bidding for Snowdrop at auction on Thursday, October 11.

All 30 giant giraffes and one giraffe calf, Lily the Pink, will go under the hammer at drp Group in Hartlebury to raise funds for the hospice’s Build 2020 Appeal.

Tricia Cavell, Fundraising Director at St Richard’s, said: “Each giraffe has a place in our hearts, but Snowdrop is extra special to everyone here at the hospice.

“She was painted by Katie Hodgetts, an artist whose granddad was cared for by St Richard’s Hospice before he died in 2016.

“We want to buy Snowdrop at auction and return her to the peaceful gardens here at St Richard’s.

“Here, Snowdrop can be seen by everyone at the hospice – creating a lasting legacy of Worcester Stands Tall, a project that means so much to the future of our care.”

The Build 2020 Appeal aims to raise the funds needed to build a bigger hospice, enabling more patients and families to be cared for in Worcestershire.

The total cost for expanding and redeveloping the existing building in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, is £5.3 million.

Under the terms of the project license, each giraffe has to go to auction.

By Snowdrop going to auction, this gives St Richard’s an opportunity to raise more funds for its appeal.

If the hospice’s bid is unsuccessful, all the money raised in this campaign will be donated to the Build 2020 Appeal.

Anyone is able to bid on a sculpture to take home or display at their business or organisation. The bidding for each sculpture is set to start at between £2,500 and £3,500.
