‘Have fun in the sun but take steps to ensure your eyes stay safe’

A Barnsley optometrist is encouraging people to think beyond protecting their skin in the summer sunshine and take steps to safeguard their sight from harmful ultraviolet rays.

While many people understand the importance of sunscreen, fewer realise that prolonged exposure to UV radiation can also damage the eyes.

Research has linked excessive UV exposure to a range of eye health issues, including cataracts, photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye) and damage to the delicate tissues surrounding the eyes. Studies also show that UV rays can penetrate cloud cover, meaning eye protection remains important even on overcast days.

To mark UV Awareness Month, which is held throughout July, Tracey Plummer, practice manager at C A Raison Opticians in Cheapside, Barnsley is advising people to wear sunglasses that provide 99-100% UVA and UVB protection, or those marked with a UV400 rating, which blocks virtually all harmful UV radiation reaching the eyes.

Eye health experts also recommend choosing well-fitting or wraparound styles to reduce UV exposure from the sides and combining sunglasses with a wide-brimmed hat for additional protection.

Tracey said: “Many people are diligent about protecting their skin from the sun but overlook the impact UV radiation can have on their eyes. UV damage accumulates over time, so protecting your eyes isn’t just important during holidays abroad – it’s something we should all be thinking about whenever we’re outdoors in sunny conditions. Choosing sunglasses with proper UV protection is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your risk of long-term eye problems.”

She added: “It’s worth remembering that darker lenses don’t automatically mean better protection. The most important thing is to look for sunglasses that clearly state they offer UV400 or 100% UV protection. If you’re unsure about your eye health or have concerns about your vision, a comprehensive eye examination is always recommended.”

Sun worshippers are urged to make eye health a priority this summer and ensure their vision is protected alongside their skin.
