Candidates will be able to turn the tables on employers in a new initiative by Birmingham-based recruitment specialists Katie Bard.

They will have the chance to quiz senior professionals in law, human resources, finance and marketing and public relations within the West Midlands to find out if they have what it takes for a career in those sectors.

The ‘Got What It Takes?’ series of events is being launched by the people management and recruitment firm to help those considering a career in the professions, and those already working in them who are keen to progress.

Verity Stokes, divisional leader at Katie Bard, which is part of the international Angela Mortimer Group, said the senior professionals leading the events would offer an invaluable insight into employer expectations as well as different routes and roles.

Verity said: “We want to give candidates a better understanding of what it takes to carve out a career in these professions as we do find that their expectations can sometimes differ from the reality of the job.

“It can be incredibly competitive, particularly in the sectors that we are focusing on, and if we can help candidates to prepare their careers and entry routes into those sectors the greater the benefit to both them and to businesses.”

Michelle Dean, director and head of the family department for HCB Solicitors in the Midlands, will address the first event on the legal sector to be held at Katie Bard’s offices in Waterloo Street, Birmingham, on Wednesday, February 7.

Michelle will talk about her own progression and what she looks for in staff, as well as discussing different career pathways including graduate and entry level, and taking questions from the floor.

She said: “What I am hoping to get across is that if you want to excel in your career then you have got to want it and want to go the extra mile in order to mark yourself out, as that is how you are going to be noticed and valued in a company.

“Initiative, drive and independence are qualities that are very much sought after and it’s about understanding that you can have an incredible career if you put the effort in.”
