North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College has been awarded first place for their green campaign which inspired over 3,000 young people.
Following an inspirational training day with SOS-UK, a student-led sustainability education charity, students at NWSLC entered the West Midlands Colleges Sustainability Competition.
Tasked with creating impactful projects to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable actions, students and staff organised Green Week as part of the College Respect the Environment Campaign, engaging more than 3,000 young people aged 16 and over.
During the week Personal Development Coaches weaved sustainability into their sessions, leading to over 2,000 students pledging to adopt greener practices both at college and at home.
The week featured numerous activities to engage students in “green activities”, including seed planting, flower growing and an eco-system for bees and wildlife design using Lego.
Old garments found new life in an upcycling scheme to reduce landfill waste and students discovered ways to cut down food miles in daily choices.
Inspired by these activities, foundation learning students collaborated with the college estates team to create a permanent vegetable garden. The project has begun with the installation of raised beds, which will be maintained by foundation learners, the gardening club, and the college’s nursery children.
Marion Plant, Principal of North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, said: “We are thrilled to win the West Midlands College Sustainability Competition. Our students’ commitment to sustainability is truly inspiring. This award recognises their hard work and the tangible steps they’re taking to create a greener future as part of our college wide journey towards net zero.”
