A city centre opticians has signed up to adopt an elephant for Worcester’s Big Parade this summer.

Specsavers, based on Pump Street, is to sponsor one of around 65 elephant sculptures – large and small – which will bring a splash of colour to Worcester’s streets and public spaces from 12 July.  At the end of the eight-week art trail, each large elephant will be auctioned to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

The optical and audiology business, which provides eye and hearcare services to local people, is the perfect partner for the parade as elephants have relatively poor vision, with a range of around just 25 feet.

Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager for St Richard’s, said: “We’re thrilled Specsavers Worcester are joining us as official optometrists to the herd.  They’re a great fit too as – due to a combination of small eyes and the position and size of their head and neck – elephants have pretty poor eyesight.”

Alan Richards, Store Director of Specsavers Worcester, said: “We remember very well the buzz in the city from the giraffe trail in 2018 and our customers would come in telling us all about the sights they’d seen and their favourite colours and designs.

“We just knew we had to get on board with Worcester’s Big Parade and are delighted to be sponsoring an elephant. After a challenging year for everyone, we want to help bring back some colour and life to the city and ensure local people don’t miss a thing this summer!”

Worcester’s Big Parade is a Wild in Art event being brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice.  It is supported by partners Crowngate, Worcester City Council, Worcester Business Improvement District (BID), DRPG, West Midland Safari Park the Worcester News and BBC Hereford & Worcester.
