Caravan owners warned to lock up ahead of holiday season

Touring caravan and motorhome owners are being warned to toughen up their security ahead of the holiday season and make sure they are adequately insured.

The number of thefts of motorhomes and caravans spike during the summer with tourers more likely to be stolen from unsecured camping sites, driveways and streets rather than from secured sites and storage premises – with only about 3% of stolen caravans being successfully recovered.

Bosses at national insurance specialists Caravan Guard, today said it worked closely with customers to highlight the risks of theft and provided information on putting tougher security measures in place, like those provided by Shropshire company Bulldog Security Products.

Liz Harrison, PR and Communications Manager at Caravan Guard, said: “Thefts of caravans go in peaks and troughs but it’s well worth highlighting the problems as people start to think about getting their tourer ready for the road at this time of year.

“The message is clear, make sure you are adequately insured and properly secure. Tourers are big investment items so it makes sense to toughen up security to avoid the heartache and inconvenience of having yours stolen.

“At Caravan Guard, the more security devices you can fit to your caravan the better, and we actively reward those customers for higher levels of security, with a range of discounts on their motorhome and caravan insurance premiums – more security means bigger discounts. This not only saves customers money, but greatly reduces the risk of theft.

“At Caravan Guard we require all our touring caravan customers to have a hitchlock and wheel clamp fitted as a minimum, and we offer information about the different security products on the market and the need to fit quality security devices.

“We don’t promote any one company’s products, rather all those companies who meet the Gold Secure Standard – Bulldog products are one of the firms which meet these high standards.

“The Bulldog brand is synonymous with quality and strength, and from our experience the company makes some of the toughest devices on the market – representing a solid investment for any caravan owner.”

Ian Jordan, managing director or Bulldog Security Products in Much Wenlock, said: “It’s amazing to think that thieves are still able to hook up a tourer and drive off when even the most basic security measures may be enough to prevent it happening.

“It’s all about crime prevention and by taking a few simple steps you may be able to ensure your property is secure. Products like GPS tracking systems, wheel clamps, wheel lock bolts, hitchlocks and security posts are easy to fit and extremely effective, and we would always advise people to buy quality products made from the toughest materials.”
