Businesses raise £13,000 for the NSPCC by staging golf day

McAuliffe Golf Day

Dozens of business leaders from across the Midlands put their golf skills to the test as they raised nearly £13,000 for the NSPCC.

The ‘Big Golf Day’ organised by engineering consultant Wardell Armstrong and brownfield specialist McAuliffe Environmental, was contested by 80 golfers over 18 holes at Edgbaston Golf Club.

A total of 18 companies took part in the golf day, and to keep the competitive juices flowing amongst the players, there was a ‘beat the pro’ challenge as well as prizes for the longest drive and nearest to the pin competitions.

The day ended with a two course meal, a charity prize draw and auction, and entertainment from comedian Jay Handley – a two-time finalist at the Birmingham New Act of the Year Awards.

The money raised will help fund the NSPCC’s vital work across the Midlands and beyond.

This includes the Childline service, which has a base in Edgbaston, and is there 24/7 for young people who often have nowhere else to turn.

Over the next three years the charity also hopes to visit all 1,064 schools in the West Midlands as part of its ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ campaign – aimed at giving a generation of children aged 5-11 the knowledge and understanding they need to stay safe from abuse and neglect.

In 2016/17, the campaign reached 225 schools, with volunteers and staff speaking to over 62,000 children.

NSPCC community fundraising manager Amanda Synnott said: “We would like to thank McAuliffe Environmental and Wardell Armstrong for organising this fabulous event and we are over the moon with the amount raised.

“The money raised will help our amazing staff and volunteers reach yet more children in schools across the West Midlands as part of our ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ campaign.

“’Speak Out Stay Safe’ has already been a tremendous success ensuring the children we reach know how to stay safe from abuse, and we look forward to spreading the message further afield thanks to the help of events like this.”

John McAuliffe, managing director of McAuliffe Group, the Wolverhampton-headquartered brownfield remediation specialists, said: “The NSPCC works hard to keep children in the West Midlands safe, and we are proud to support the charity again this year.

“Thank you to all the Midlands business leaders who turned out to raise money for this brilliant cause.”
