A podcast in tribute to legendary football manager Brian Clough has received national recognition at a prestigious awards ceremony in London.
The Green Jumper Podcast, hosted by Nottingham-based former journalist Marcus Alton, was ‘Highly Commended’ at the UK Independent Podcast Awards 2025. Judges praised the way it is still uncovering new stories about the charismatic Clough.
The awards are for podcasts that are free from corporate ties and include shows from solo creators. Marcus produces and presents the Green Jumper in a spare room at home.
This latest success follows similar recognition earlier in the year, when the podcast was named as one of the best football pods in the global Sports Podcast Awards.
The Green Jumper features stories and memories about the European Cup winning Clough, with a range of guests, including former players, fans, friends and journalists.
Said Marcus: “It was brilliant to reach the final of the Independent Podcast Awards because the standard of the nominees was so high. Then to be highly commended as one of the best sports podcasts in the UK was a huge honour.”
Judges comments included: “This is a super unique podcast – the fact that the host is still uncovering new stories about Brian Clough, and finding people willing to share them, is a real testament to the research and dedication behind the show. I never realised I could learn so much about Brian Clough!”
Marcus runs the non-profit tribute website, brianclough.com, with the support of Clough’s family, and has written five books about Cloughie, including one which featured a foreword by Mrs Clough. He’s also spoken at several book festivals and held live pod events, raising thousands of pounds for good causes.
“There’s been a wonderful response to the podcast since it was launched in 2021, with thousands of downloads in more than 90 countries,” added Marcus.
The tribute website recently marked its 25th anniversary and received a message of congratulations from Brian’s son, Simon. Marcus was also the driving force behind the successful campaign for a statue of Brian Clough in Nottingham.
