Boozy fragrances are setting the bar this Autumn

The Spirited scents you’ll want in your fragrance wardrobe (not drink) this winter – no hangover necessary!

Boozy fragrances are seeing a spike in demand – as UK searches for “whisky perfume”, “rum-inspired fragrance” and “boozy scent” increase.

Perfumers are increasingly incorporating more adventurous, less ‘perfumy’ notes into new fragrances. Instead adding fragrance notes like rum, whisky, tequila, mojito, and orange bitters into wearable creations that evoke the ambience of a glamorous cocktail soiree or late-night jazz club.

There’s a real appetite for depth and originality in fragrance right now,” says Jonny Webber, fragrance expert at PerfumeDirect.com. “And a new category is emerging – boozy scents are gaining attention, similar to the previous trend for gourmand fragrances.”

A boozy fragrance usually mimics or is inspired by the notes, warmth, and richness of alcoholic drinks – such as aged spirits, dark liqueurs, and sometimes sparkling cocktails. Top notes might include spice, citrus zest, or dried fruit (like the first sip of a cocktail). Middle notes often mimic liqueur, rum, whisky, or cognac accords. And base notes lean to amber, vanilla, woods, leather, or tonka bean.

Jonny explains: “Classic floral, woody, and amber notes will always be timeless – but today’s fragrance lovers are seeking out niche blends that that feel more emotional, textured, and less ‘polished’. Scents that stand out in a crowd.

“A boozy signature scent can be as elegant as champagne, as cosy as mulled wine, or as bold as an espresso martini, depending on your preference. You get the richness of a rum or cognac accord, but when blended with spice, vanilla, or woods, it becomes deeply elegant rather than overpowering.

Look out for notes of rum-soaked vanilla, whisky barrels, brandy, and fortified wine,” advises Webber. “Tequila brings citrusy zest with a peppery twist, while cognac notes add depth and oak-spiced richness. The results are intoxicating in every sense, blending the richness of rum, champagne, and whisky with the warmth of gourmands, spices, woods or rich fruits. They’re luxurious, sensual, layered… and undeniably indulgent.”

Webber adds that the trend also aligns with a broader cultural shift: “Interestingly, as Gen Z embraces the sober-curious lifestyle, we’ve seen more demand for perfumes that evoke celebration and indulgence without the hangover. These fragrances are about mood and experience, not just scent.”
