An independent opticians in Castle Douglas recently refurbished their practice with an impressive new look and expanded services to improve the standards of eye care available to the local community.
Purcell Opticians, a well-respected independent practice situated on Academy Street in the heart of Castle Douglas, has been serving the eyes of the local community since its establishment by Jim Purcell in 2007.
The practice recently reopened following an extensive refurbishment which aimed to modernise the interior of the practice and allow for new services to be brought into the limelight.
Following the refurbishment, the practice has introduced new technology, including Optomap – a state-of-the-art imaging system which is able to capture detailed images of the eye, including the extreme peripheral areas of the retina. This provides a deeper and broader view of the eye’s internal structures, allowing for early detection of serious conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, and many more.
Director and optometrist at Purcell Opticians, Mitchell Fairley, said: “Accessibility to an Optomap scan can quite often be as vital as helping to save someone’s sight.

The refurbishment has also provided the practice interior with a fresh new look helping to showcase their extensive independent frame ranges and create an environment that prioritises comfort alongside clinical excellence.
Alongside the introduction of the new Optomap technology, Purcell Opticians are now offering an ‘enhanced plus’ eye examination, utilising both Optomap and 3D OCT scans to ensure that both eye health and eyesight needs are met with personalised solutions.
