adi Digital puts Network Rail Health & Safety on the right track

Network Rail staff and contractors on a training course

Ensuring the health and safety of everyone involved in a project is a tricky business at the best of times. But imagine how complex it is when your project is playing out on multiple sites across an entire region and with hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of staff and contractors in the mix.

That was the problem faced by Network Rail Wales in delivering Electrification Project for the Greater West Modernisation Programme – a multimillion-pound scheme of major rail improvements in South Wales and the biggest investment in the railway since Victorian times.

Looking to deploy a comprehensive safety solution across the whole programme, Network Rail Wales turned to Birmingham-based adi Digital for one of the key components – a real-time Digital Notification System that keeps all parties updated on the latest health and safety information.

adi Digital – a systems integrator delivering digital technology solutions as an arm of multi-disciplinary engineering firm, adi Group – went to work in the summer of 2017.

By that August, adi Digital and Network Rail Wales had finalised the Phase 1 roll-out plan to an initial 12 sites of the Digital Notification System, made up of multiple screens on each site, constantly updated with multi-media content, including safety notices, alerts, project updates, animations and videos.

After adi provided full training to Network Rail staff and to key contractors on how to design and publish multi-media content to the network, Phase 1 was rolled out to all remote sites to coincide with Network Rail’s major H&S initiative on ‘working at heights’.

Vic Brashko, adi Digital Managing Director, took a moment to talk about the project.

“It was clear from our earliest discussions that Network Rail rightly takes a rigorous approach to the health and safety of its staff, its contractor partners and the travelling public, so our Digital Noticeboard Solution serves as a great way to ensure everyone involved is fully updated and party to the very latest project information.

Most of these sites were not on the Network Rail data network or even plugged into mains electricity, so our team had to develop a robust solution that could operate on local generators and 4G wireless connectivity. I’m happy to say that we have that in place now and the benefits are reflected in ongoing health and safety outcomes.”

Justin Owens, Piling Construction Manager Wales, Network Rail Wales, said “Working with adi Digital has enabled Network Rail to embrace the very latest in Digital Noticeboard technology to deliver feature rich and compelling visual content that really drives home the importance of health and safety in our industry.

The adi Digital Noticeboard solution gives us and our contractors the ability to create, manage and distribute consistent, timely and vital H&S information from a single location to our offices and main worksites on the Electrification Project for The Greater West Programme.”
