A guide to buying expensive electrical goods online

Our lives have been irrevocably changed by the events that occurred in 2020, and even when things do return to ‘normal’, they are likely to be vastly different from the lives we once knew.

The pandemic has seen seismic shifts on our behaviours which many find irreversible. Working from home, for instance, is not a new phenomenon, but has become increasingly popular. Employees have adapted well to remote working and in turn that has seen a shift in buying habits within the housing market, as high-end country homes have seen the strongest price performance for a decade. Similarly, retail has been hit as well, with the BBC suggesting sales on the High Street have slumped to their worst levels for 25 years.

That does not mean we have stopped buying for good though, merely that our buying habits are changing along with the restrictions placed upon us. As we covered in our article Big Boys Toys, high-end goods continue to be coveted and purchased across the country. If anything, customers are more likely to invest in high-end electrical goods for their home, on the understanding we are spending increasing amounts of time confined to where we live.

That means people are turning to eCommerce, a sector thriving under current conditions. The industry saw a rise of almost £5.8 billion last year, a figure that is likely to remain stable even after we can pound the tarmac of our High Streets again. From video games to consoles, cosmetics to electrics, the UK has gone online and there is no going back.

That does present a new shopping experience though, one in which may be a concern to someone making a high-end purchase. Buying a new TV would usually entail looking at picture quality in-store, asking about specs from an assistant and maybe being offered alternatives. Instead, buying online is more challenging and should you choose to make your next big purchase online, you should perhaps take this advice on board prior to clicking on the basket.

Research

Perhaps the most important aspect of buying online is to understand exactly what you are purchasing before you click buy. The internet does afford you the opportunity to research, extensively, and you should make sure you do as much as possible before venturing into a virtual store. Check out popular review sites, often they allow for interaction with other users where you can ask about the product. Understand clearly what you want from your purchase too – if you are buying a laptop for gaming, do a simple ‘best gaming laptop’ search on Google. It may seem rudimentary and obvious, but it will help you understand the product better than a five-minute conversation with someone in a shop who is being paid commission to sell to you.

Voucher Codes

One aspect of online shopping that is attractive to buyers is the potential for finding discount codes. By continuing your research beyond the brand and model of the product you want, you may be able to find discount codes, with the TV discount codes on Groupon showing how many providers often have strong offers available for new purchases. Keep an eye out as you go about your business on the internet too, as search algorithms may deliver such offers to you without you being aware. If you are looking to buy a TV, do some searches and research and wait for a day or so, you will soon see offers and the like flooding in, some of which may offer good discounts.

Shop Around

If you were to go into your local town to buy a TV, it is likely you would go to a couple of stores to compare prices. Online is no different, visit several sites and assess the different options within each. What is the delivery charge for instance, and do you have a warranty or returns policy to be aware of? If the site is not a brand you know, then research them just as you have done the product. Online shopping is a great way to get product variety and good offers, but it is also easier to be scammed, so just be careful. Remember, if you were to walk into Argos, you would have little worry about who was selling you the product, but online you must be a little more vigilant.

Conclusion

The key is research. Research the product, research the market and research the sellers. Understand all ends of the purchase, from product to payment details and back to the provider. Buying electrical goods online is a great way to get good deals and variety, but you must always keep your wits about you.
