Dads and carers, if you are struggling to brush tangled hair or think ‘plaits’ are just something done in dough on the Bake Off, you’re invited to discover the fun of styling your children’s hair at Plaits & Play, a free family workshop designed to build confidence, creativity and connection through the art of hair styling.
Taking place at Leeds City Museum on Saturday 17 October, 11am-5pm, the hands-on event will give families the opportunity to learn simple, practical hair techniques together, from easy plaits and everyday styling to hair-care tips that can be used at home.
Hosted by This is Yorkshire Beauty and Leeds Dads as part of the official Yorkshire celebrations for British Beauty Week, the event explores this year’s theme of Impact, highlighting how beauty can play a meaningful role in everyday family life, from building confidence and self-expression to creating opportunities for care, connection and shared experiences.
Leeds-based BOOMCHIKKABOOM will show dads and carers simple, achievable techniques in 60-minute sessions that they can use at home, covering basic plaits, everyday styling, and practical hair-care tips. All hair types will be welcomed, catered for and celebrated. Children attending will also be able to take part in creative play. Each Dad can bring one child aged 2-11 and ‘model heads’ will be provided for dads to practice and learn.
The event is designed to celebrate the important role dads and carers play in their children’s lives, while recognising that something as everyday as doing a child’s hair can become an opportunity for bonding, confidence-building and self-expression.

The event is being made possible thanks to the support of local firms, The Salon Stockroom, Bloom Longevity Labs, RJC Plant Services and Leeds Museum, helping ensure the workshop is free for families to attend.
