Employers are increasingly investing in nature-inspired office designs to improve mental health and productivity, according to Derby-based fit-out specialists DSP (Interiors).
The firm has reported a significant rise in demand for office projects that bring natural elements indoors – using natural light, greenery and sustainable materials to help employees feel calmer, healthier and more engaged at work.
The approach, known as biophilic design, has become one of the biggest trends in workplace interiors as companies look for new ways to improve wellbeing and productivity.
Olivia Priestley, commercial director at the firm based on Derby’s Parker Industrial Estate, said the trend reflects a wider cultural shift in how businesses think about staff welfare.
“Workplace design has a huge impact on how people feel,” she said. “After the challenges of recent years, employers increasingly recognise that creating an environment that supports wellbeing isn’t a luxury, it’s essential for productivity and retention.
“We’ve moved past the novelty of working from home. For many, what once felt liberating can now feel isolating or uninspiring. People are seeking connection and spaces that help them perform at their best.
“Forward-thinking employers are responding by reimagining their offices as destinations, rather than obligations. That means designing spaces that balance focus and flexibility.
Aaron Buchan, design director at the firm said “We’re seeing a growing demand for quiet zones for deep work, collaborative areas for brainstorming, and comfortable, well-lit breakout spaces that support relaxation.
“Incorporating biophilic design, natural light, ergonomic furniture and wellness-focused features such as reading rooms makes staff feel supported and valued.
“Many of these features offer proven benefits, from improving air quality to reducing stress and fatigue. Increasing natural light through open layouts and glass partitions is also helping businesses create brighter, more collaborative spaces that require less artificial lighting.”
DSP Interiors has delivered several local projects showcasing this move towards greener design, including full height moss walls at companies such as Sure Screen Diagnostics.
The firm has also incorporated natural textures like stone and wood-effect materials in offices for AMS Hayley and in its own Derby headquarters.
Alongside wellbeing, sustainability has become a key driver for employers. DSP works with suppliers using carbon-neutral carpet ranges, recycled acoustic materials and furniture made from sustainable timber and recycled fabrics.
“More of our clients are asking how their workspaces can reflect their environmental values,” added Olivia. “The healthiest spaces are those that look after both people and the planet.”
Experts in workplace design say biophilic and sustainable interiors can improve employee focus and job satisfaction – outcomes that employers are prioritising as part of wider efforts to retain staff and rebuild company culture post-pandemic.
