A budding Black Country golfer is on course to raise nearly £2000 for Prostate Cancer UK after spending more than 14 hours on the fairways and greens.
17-year-old George Evans and colleague Sean Gill took on The Big Golf Race recently to generate much needed funding and awareness for prostate cancer, which affects one in eight men during their lifetime and is the only major cancer without a national screening programme.
The duo teed off at 4.30am and, during the mammoth challenge, each completed 60,000+ steps, 42 miles and 400 shots, with 100 holes successfully navigated at Stourbridge Golf Club.
“I’ve been aware of the impact of prostate cancer from an early age and wanted to do something to help,” explained George, who works as an apprentice Greenkeeper at the golf club.
“A lot of my time is spent playing golf or tending to the fairways, so I thought why not put the two together and complete the biggest charity challenge of my life. Fortunately, my colleague Sean was happy to take part so we both signed up for the Big Golf Race.”
He continued: “It was tough, I’m not going to lie. The physical exertion is something else and we even had to contend with our golf buggy (with clubs) rolling into one of the bunkers.
“Still, it was all worthwhile when you look at the fact we’ve nearly raised £2000. A lot of people say they want to help, but we are really pleased to have risen to the challenge. Anyone who has played golf will tell you how hard it is to complete one round.”
Mikesh Jivan-Patel, Financial Controller for Stourbridge-based Kendrick Homes, was keen to support this great fundraiser.
“The firm and our staff really got behind the challenge by donating generously to the cause and supporting him on the day and welcoming them on to the 18th for the fifth time, eventually putting the final ball after 14 hours of non-stop golf.
“As a business, we are massive believers in supporting local people who are raising money for causes close to our collective hearts.”
He continued: “Construction is still a predominantly male industry, so prostate cancer is something that sadly touches many people across the sector. The fact that one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime really makes you think. All the money raised will go towards finding better treatments and, hopefully, one day a cure. Well done George and Sean, fantastic effort!”
