Education

Obviously, this is a role that requires education and training. There is no set path for this as you can learn the ropes by going to a college, through an apprenticeship or simply by working alongside a plumber as their assistant or “mate”. Whichever route you choose to go down, you will need some qualifications, and certifications further down the line.

Qualifications

There are some qualifications that you will need in order to progress into plumbing. To become a plumber, you can take a Level 2 and level 3 diploma course in plumbing and domestic heating or a T level course for plumbing and domesticating technicians. If you decide to become a plumber by working alongside one, you will need to register with a professional body. This includes getting a construction skills certification scheme (CSCS) card or you could consider joining a professional body, such as the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering.Be aware of any additional qualifications you need to practise, for instance if you work with gas boilers, you will need to be certified to work with them.

Tools

You need a range of tools to take on work as a plumber and it is important to have quality and reliable tools in your bag. This will include items such as:

  • Wrenches
  • Pipe cutters
  • Pipe benders
  • Pipe freezing kit
  • Pliers
  • Soldering torch

This can be a lot to lug around, which is why using a Milwaukee tool bag is a great way to keep your tools organised and in one place while on the job.
