There is more to Ascot than horse racing

Ascot is one of those dream locations that most people associate with unique events and a posh accent. Individuals and businesses alike are thrilled with the prospect of going to Royal Ascot, either as a spectator or, as Midland firm Jupiter announced in 2018, as a supplier for the races. Indeed, Ascot is synonymous with elegance, sophistication, and luxury.

However, for those who live in Ascot, the reality couldn’t be further away from the glamour of the races. Growing up in a small town in east Berkshire is a lot more than fancy dresses, classy cocktails, and oversized fascinators. Ascot is a small place filled with exciting and improbable quirks that differentiate it from other towns. If you are planning to move to Ascot, it’s worth exploring the non-romanticised version of life down there.

A unique school life of nurturing independence

Every student who grew up in Ascot could testify of the school rivalries. Ascot offers a variety of top-quality schools fostering independent thinking, creativity, and academic knowledge, whether you opt for a UK boarding school or a traditional day school. Because Ascot has a long heritage of schools, parents have a huge variety of options, many established for over 100 years. Yet, don’t be fooled by their age. Ascot education is one of the most forward-looking in the country, developing a sense of identity and purpose in every student.

A plethora of starred and praised restaurants

Very much like London, Ascot is a typical going out place. Even though the town is small, visitors have a choice between many high-quality restaurants, all within easily commutable distance. However, unlike London, you don’t have to worry about tube stations, cab fares, or even rush hour traffic. Thanks to its location, Ascot is a self-contained gourmet hub, including many Michelin-starred kitchens. The iconic French delicacy restaurant launched by the Roux brothers, The Waterside Inn, is a short drive north of Ascot in Bray. For creative and playful eaters, Heston Blumenthal’s legendary Fat Duck restaurant is just around the corner, presenting unique gastronomic creations.

How being adventurous can boost your creative cells

Finally, the local population is the first to admit that Ascot can feel too small at times. When fanciful dinners or races aren’t scheduled, the locals enjoy a leisure walk along the river bank. It’s the perfect spot to meet owners and their dogs. So, in times of extreme boredom, it’s not uncommon to time your walk with the neighbourhood’s dog owners. A few miles outside of town, enthusiastic adventurers enjoy the Go Ape park in Bracknell, spending a few hours cruising through the trees and connecting with nature. Despite its famous races and restaurants, Ascot remains a small place that paces its lifestyle with nature.

Telling people you are moving to Ascot is guaranteed to put a curious look on their faces. Yet, don’t give in to the comments about the posh life. There is a lot more to Ascot than going to the races. In many ways, living in Ascot gives you access to cultural variety, both for education and entertainment life, without the urban hassle of a big city.
