Fiat has taken its popular but often-overlooked Fiat Tipo and given it the SUV treatment. The result is the Fiat Tipo Cross, which is taller than its stable-mates, with chunkier bumpers and side skirts, roof bars and larger tyres.
The result is a sturdy looking car which, like the Panda Cross, should appeal to a new, younger buyer.
The Tipo Cross has just one engine choice – a one litre petrol unit – which develops 100 bhp. Its plenty big enough to give pleasing performance while still being frugal.
The design of the mid-sector Tipo Cross is strong, well-balanced and pleasing; more eye catching than its predecessors. Its sharply-lined profile, increased height and assertive road stance set it apart.
Inside too, the design is attractive as well as practical, with adequate leg and headroom and a big loadspace which can be made even bigger by folding the 60/40 split rear seats. The seats are comfortable, with supportive sides. And there’s plenty of space around the cabin for keys, phone, money and other bits and pieces.
The latest Tipo range starts at £17,690 for the entry level model. The Tipo Cross is the most expensive variant at £21,655. You get a high level specification for your money, including smart 17-inch alloy wheels, steering wheel mounted controls, satellite navigation via a touchscreen, all round electric windows, adaptive cruise control, automatic wipers and lights, air conditioning, rear parking sensors with camera, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, leather steering wheel, high quality seat trim, lane control and a good DAB radio with media inputs and Bluetooth.
The 1.0 litre, 100 horsepower petrol unit is a good performer. It pulls well throughout the range of a slick, pleasant-to-use five-speed manual gearbox. At no point did it feel as if it needed a sixth cog.
Ride and handling are comfortable and confident. Steering is taut and precise, and the car feels substantial and composed, even when cornering at speed.
The Tipo Cross deserves to be popular with British drivers. Hopefully this latest version should ensure it does just that.
