‘Slip into Slippers’ for Older People’s Day in October

Age UK Solihull is inviting Solihull residents to slip into slippers to help raise much-needed funds.

UN International Day of Older Persons, and UK Older People’s Day, fall on Friday 1 October, and the local charity is asking local schools, businesses and individuals to don their cosiest footwear for the day and make a small donation to celebrate older people and raise funds to help them be there for those who need them.

Slip into Slippers is a local event devised by Age UK Solihull and is now in its eighth year. In 2020, £2,632 was raised from the event. Nine schools took part, including Marston Green Infant Academy, Damson Wood Nursery & Infant School, Sharmans Cross Junior School, and Balsall Common Primary School. Companies that joined in last year included daMar Security Systems, SpaMedica Coventry, and Legal & General who raised an impressive £720 towards the total, thanks to their match funding scheme.

Age UK Solihull is a local charity which helps over 10,000 older people in the borough each year. All money raised stays in Solihull to help the charity offer advice, information and practical support to the older people in the borough through services including befriending, social clubs, gentle exercise classes and home support.

Age UK Solihull is also the lead partner in the delivery of Solihull’s Community Advice Hubs, where any Solihull resident aged 18+ and their carers can access information, advice and support.

Rebecca Jacob, Fundraising Officer at Age UK Solihull, says, “We always look forward to Slip Into Slippers each year, as it is an easy and fun way to raise funds to help us support local older and vulnerable people, while also conveying a serious message about the valuable contribution older people make to our society.

“You can take part with your school or work colleagues, or as an individual, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re at home, work or out and about – as long as it is safe to do so, you can give your feet a treat and help raise funds. If everyone donates just £1 each it can help us make a real difference.”
