Schools across the UK are celebrating the transformative impact of the Positive Playtime Award Programme, founded by education consultant and author Thérèse Hoyle. From reducing behaviour incidents to creating calmer, happier lunchtimes, Positive Playtimes are helping schools make playtime the best part of the school day.
In July, Thérèse was honoured to be invited to the House of Lords for the launch of the Alliance 4 Children Power 2 Play report — a landmark event championing children’s developmental, ethical, and legal rights to play. The day included the formal hand-in of the report and petition at Downing Street, before concluding at the Young V&A. Surrounded by MPs, peers, and fellow advocates, the event highlighted the vital importance of safeguarding children’s right to play.
Proven Impact in Schools
- At Oasis Academy Ryelands in Croydon, the Positive Playtime Award Programme has transformed play culture. Within just six months, the school saw a 70% reduction in aggressive behaviour at playtimes. Two years on, pupils enjoy calmer lunchtimes, stronger peer relationships, and a happier, more harmonious school environment.
- At Martin Primary School in Barnet, the results were equally striking. In the first three weeks of introducing the Positive Playtime Programme, accidents decreased from 65 to 38 and behaviour incidents reduced from 102 to 57.
Schools that embed these changes are recognised through the Positive Playtime Award, which celebrates schools that have transformed their lunchtimes into safe, inclusive, and harmonious experiences. With schools like Oasis Academy Ryelands and Martin Primary already seeing remarkable results, more schools are now working towards the Award – creating a ripple effect of positive change across the country.
Launch of New Policy Document
Building on these successes, Thérèse has launched a new policy document: Why Play Matters – Why We Need to Get Children Playing in Schools. Born from over 25 years of experience, it is packed with evidence, practical strategies, and inspiring stories that highlight the vital role of play for children’s development and wellbeing.
As the American Academy of Paediatrics notes: “Play is not frivolous. It is brain-building.”
Thérèse said: “Play is not optional – it’s essential. Every child deserves a positive and inclusive playtime experience. Our mission is to make playtime the very best part of the school day.”
