Family, friends and holidays featured in prize-winning pictures created by local children for an art competition in Birmingham.
The Moments that Matter competition, held by John Taylor Hospice and Oikos Café, asked youngsters to create a picture of their favourite moment.
More than 140 pictures were entered and 30 finalists were chosen to be included in an exhibition currently on display at Oikos Café in Erdington’s High Street.
First, second and third prizes were announced at a special Evening of Creativity organised by Café Arts Forum at Oikos last Friday (May 17).
The winner was 11-year-old Aliyah Uddin of Stechford whose self-portrait at her 11th birthday party was deemed by judges to perfectly sum up a favourite moment.
Aliyah said: “It was really exciting to find out that I had won as I never thought I would. The moment I shared was from my birthday party which was a great day – although I had a test at school before which wasn’t as good.”
The second prize went to seven-year-old Dylan Soo who drew a family holiday. Dylan’s mum Siet Lee from Sutton Coldfield said: “We’re really happy that Dylan finished second.
“When Dylan shared the moment he had drawn with us it was great to hear he had focused on a family moment as that is what really matters and it was good to know he understands that.”
And third prize was presented to six-year-old Daisy Parmar for her picture of a visit to see her Nanny.
Daisy’s mum Laura from Yardley Wood said: “I think that this competition was a great idea. Daisy has been really excited and keeps telling everyone about it so it is great she won a prize.”
Other finalists were also presented with prizes at the event which was attended by more than 100 people.
John Taylor Hospice CEO Penny Venables, who was one of the competition judges, said: “It was lovely to meet the children who had created such wonderful pictures and to hear the stories behind them.
“This is the first time we have held an art competition in Birmingham and we have been so impressed with the pictures from all of the children.”
Oikos Centre Manager Ben Jeffery added: “The exhibition is at Oikos Café throughout May and we have already received so many positive comments from people about the pictures. It has been great to work with the hospice on the competition and the Evening of Creativity when so many people of all ages came together to enjoy activities and music.”
The Moments that Matter art competition was held as part of John Taylor Hospice’s events to mark Dying Matters Awareness Week, a national campaign to encourage conversations around death and dying. It was inspired by the hospice’s motto that every moment matters.
