With the news that more than half of 18-34 year olds would consider joining the care profession, Lincolnshire-based homecare provider Walnut Care at Home are on the hunt for dedicated young people to add to their award-winning team of over 200 carers.
According to newly released figures from the Department of Health and Social Care, 64% of 18-34 year olds would consider a career in adult social care, with the sense of fulfilment that comes from caring for others the main reason cited.
The survey of over 2000 adults is part of the Department’s ‘When you care, every day makes a difference’ recruitment campaign, which aims to inspire compassionate individuals to fill the 122,000 vacant roles across the sector.
Although 1.5 million people currently work in health and social care in the UK, an aging population means that an additional 580,000 workers will be needed by 2035. Furthermore, a large number of the current workforce – 385,000 – are 55 years of age or over, meaning they are likely to retire in the next 10 years. More young people with the right values need to join the sector to avoid a shortage, and to ensure that society’s most vulnerable are cared for.
