High street bakery Greggs has seen off stiff competition* to be voted ‘Best Retailer over £250m’ and ‘Value Retailer of the Year’ at the 2020 Retail Week Awards.
Industry bigwigs were especially wowed by the launch of Greggs’ now famous vegan sausage roll, which caused queues out of store doors up and down the country when it launched, as well as an entertaining Twitter spat with TV’s Piers Morgan.
The clever people at Greggs have been wowing British shoppers with other exciting launches, like their handy new pre-order app and a new Nando’s style black card which they’ve gifting to lucky celebrity fans like Stormzy.
It’s been a record retail year for the Longbenton-based bakery chain, which first opened back in 1939, and it has become a go-to for penny-conscious shoppers looking for easy food on-the-go that can be vegan, too.
Following the success of the vegan sausage roll, Greggs has ‘rolled out’ more vegan foodie gems, which have gone down a storm with shoppers. Greggs boss Roger Whiteside himself has made the switch to being vegan, after trying his company’s tasty vegan fare and understanding more about the health benefits.
Poppie Mickleburgh, Retail Week Awards Event Director, said: “Greggs should be very proud of its double win at this year’s awards. The company has built a huge fan base with British shoppers and become something of a national treasure over the past few years while tapping into big trends like veganism. Well done team Greggs, keep up the great work!”
Mike Green, Senior Area Vice President and UKI Head of Retail, Salesforce, commented, “Greggs is a retailer that is revolving and evolving around the shopper, with that they are listening to their customers and delivering what they need, want and desire. Worthy winners in a challenging and changing environment.”
