Three intrepid cyclists gear up for colossal charity challenge

Rob, Richard & Matt

The James Cable Memorial Ride 2022 will see the three-strong group of Rob, Richard and Matt ride from London to Paris to fundraise for The Mary Stevens Hospice.

This epic journey will begin on July 20th which will see the team of devoted cyclists ride from London to Paris in just four days, in memory of Richard’s son-in-law, James Cable.

Just under 12 months ago, James was given the devastating diagnosis of terminal cancer. At this point in time, James was 34 years old, with two children under the age of 5 and was working as Head of Science at The Pedmore High School, Stourbridge.

James sadly deteriorated rapidly, and The Mary Stevens Hospice was able to provide the care that James needed, which simply could not have been provided at home. The care that James and his family received has inspired The James Cable Memorial Ride, which will fundraise for the Hospice that helped James spend quality time with his family in their last moments together.

Richard Carroll, James’s Father-in-law and challenge organiser said:  “Mary Stevens Hospice was able to provide care of the very highest standard and enable James’s family to spend some quality last moments with him, including allowing Tom and Alice to visit him in a place that didn’t resemble a hospital, meaning their last memories of Daddy were not scary.

Our training has been very tough with regularly more than 100 miles a week for all of us, for several months, but now we are all ready and looking forward to the ride and raising as much money as possible for this great cause.”

Rob, Richard and Matt will start their fundraising challenge on Wednesday 20th July, covering 90 miles in the first day alone!
