Members of a Telford indoor rowing club brought home the medals from the British Rowing Indoor Championships – the first time it has been held since the pandemic.

Jim Mostyn took eight members of his club, Gym Mostyn, which he runs with his wife Sally, to the NEC in Birmingham for the national event.

The indoor rowers had been training for the event with Jim and Sally at the indoor rowing club which is based at Wrekin College. Jim has been running Gym Mostyn which includes indoor rowing sessions, circuit training sessions and PT sessions, for the last 22 years.

The sportsmen and women could choose which distance they wanted to compete in from 500 metres to 5,000 metres.

The British Indoor Rowing Championships event saw Irene Lysons take silver in the 75-79 women’s category with her 2,000 metre performance in 10 minute 23 seconds.

While Camilla Stewart also took silver in the 40-49 women’s category with her 2,000 metres time of 7 minutes 52.8 seconds.

Representing the men in the 75-79 age category, Derek Vaughan, completed his 500 metres in 1 minute 65.2 seconds.

Mike Robinson covered 2000 metres in 7 minutes 25.9 seconds ranking him 18th in the British Championships in the 65-69 male age category; while Stew Edmondson came 6th in the 55-59 age category covering 2000 metres in 6 minutes 51.1 seconds.

Richard Greaves competed in the 50-54 age group and finished in 18th place with 7 minutes 04.0 seconds and Mark Lysons finished 28th in the 45-49 age male category with a 2000 metre time of 6 minute 59.2 seconds.

Catherine Luton competed in the open 500 metres category and was ranked 12th position after completing 500 metres in 1 minute 47.6 seconds.

Jim Mostyn, who is very proud of all of the indoor rowers who took part, said: “This was the first British Rowing Indoor Championships since the pandemic so it was brilliant to get back and compete for national rankings.

“It was also probably the most difficult comeback for people as even though we have been training hard, we all know the pandemic impacted on people and their health and fitness in so many different ways.

“The rowers were all brilliant and should be very proud of themselves. The oldest male indoor rower competing was 92 years old which is just phenomenal and just proves it is a sport that anyone can take part in.

“Our rowers at the club don’t all want to compete and that is fine and rather want to come each week or more than once a week to keep their fitness up.”
