Over the last few weeks, I’ve found it difficult to comprehend how much disruption and devastation the COVID-19 virus has had on everyday life. But, confined to the four walls of my home, I was struggling with the helplessness I was feeling in trying to think of ways I could ‘do something’ to help and support people during this horrific time. Where do you start? There are so many people that have been affected by the virus: the homeless, the elderly, key workers, businesses, those with mental health issues, those with disabilities, those that live alone – everyone. And I just couldn’t think of a way to reach them all.
It was 6pm and I tuned into the daily coronavirus update one night when I found it.
The National Emergencies Trust made a public appeal for fundraising to help those most affected by the coronavirus outbreak. “The Government is doing everything it can to alleviate some of this pressure. However, at times like this, it is the strength and desire to help from the public that can make the most difference.” And there it was, the moment I realised that there WAS something I could do and these words made me realise that it WOULD make a difference.
The Trust works collaboratively with a wide range of organisations to ensure the maximum amount of money is raised and distributed securely, effectively, and fairly to those organisations and local charities who can do the most to help those in need.
Whilst in lockdown, I couldn’t bungy jump, cycle ride, or complete anything huge and crazy but I could do something that I’ll be reminded of everyday I wake up…
I shaved all my hair off on Wednesday 15th April via live online broadcast to all those that sponsored me to do so and I managed to raise £987 for The National Emergency Trust’s Coronavirus Appeal.
John Herriman, Chief Executive Officer at the National Emergency Trust, sent a personal message of support to me after I notified him of my fundraising efforts. “it’s such an awesome way to support the appeal, thank you so much for being such a star and the money raised will go a long way. The average grant we make to grassroots charities is just over £3K so you can see how much of a difference your support will make. Enjoy growing your hair back and be reassured that you’ve done your bit to help others who find themselves in a difficult place.”
