Standing up for women in tech

Feride Adili

Vice President of online bank of things Twig, Feride Adili, 36, is one woman in tech who admits that she has had to outwork her male colleagues during her 15+ years of working in tech.

The computer science specialist is proud to be standing up and showing up for women this International Women’s Day to encourage more to join the tech workforce.

“I’m pleased to say that it’s no longer just a profession for coders, number crunchers or those who want to look at screens all day. With AI accelerating and impacting more of our lives it will continue to open up many new, exciting and diverse roles.

“Rewind the clock 15 years and the tech space has come a long way. When I graduated and moved into my first role I was just one of a big team of men and I had to work longer and harder than everyone just to be heard and recognised and prove that I had the same, if not better, skills than my male colleagues.

“With that being said it wasn’t a problem or an unhappy place to be. I knew I was at the start of  a pioneering path for other women to follow – and they did, but it has taken time. I would say that I have only seen this change in the last six years and I am pleased to say that I head up a team of five, four of which are women.

“Has it been deliberate to employ a biiger ratio of women? Not at all. Everyone who works at Twig has to fit into our family of people’s people, to be able to do the work but be friendly, open and creative at the same time.”

Feride goes on to say that she’s self built herself in a male dominated profession. To be resilient, to challenge the norm and to strive for what you want. As an early riser, her kick start is always coffee first, and then checking emails and actions from the previous day to ensure she is ahead of her team.

“I want to continue being a great leader for everyone, and if I can inspire more women along the way that to break down barriers and go for it in whatever male-dominated profession they want then that’s good enough for me.”
