Sports Direct (which is part of the Frasers Group), is launching a hard-hitting environmentally conscious campaign to help save the UK’s declining Bumblebee population.
Save Bumblebees is a collaboration between the retail giant and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust – the only UK charity dedicated wholly to saving our bumblebees.
The nationwide campaign runs throughout April in Sports Direct retail outlets and online, with in-store activations featuring seed walls, educational hotspots and a massive give away of educational leaflets and seed papers to encourage customers to plant Oxeye daisies and poppies – the perfect blend of wildflower seeds to attract bumblebees and facilitate pollination.
The campaign commenced with the appearance of the first seed wall at the company’s flagship Oxford Street store on April 2nd & 3rd, while this weekend (April 9th & 10th), one of Sports Direct’s newest stores in Portsmouth, is inviting the public to visit the store and enjoy the ‘educational experience’ before it is moved on to Sports Direct stores in Watford on 15th & 16th April and Leicester on 23rd & 24th April.
The shocking facts: There are 24 native species of bumblebees, 2 are already extinct while eight species are in need of urgent help. One third of our food source relies on these little pollinators. We’ve already lost 97% of our flower rich grasslands that bumble bees rely on to pollinate. It’s up to us to replenish them to enable the bees to thrive.
Mike Ashley said: “Thank you from the Frasers family for all the customer support and engagement, this is a small step in the right direction.”
Sports Direct is inviting people to visit their stores nationwide, pick up the pollinator paper, plant seeds and grow wildflowers with their children to save the declining bumblebee population.
The company invited Joanna Lumley to voice over a TV advert that explains why bumblebees are so important to the environment.
