Solihull skiing star Scott earns Youth Olympics selection

A Dorridge teenager is celebrating after being selected for Team GB in next month’s Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland.

Scott Johns, 16, has been selected to represent Great Britain in the team’s sole spot in Ski Cross and his recognition is reward for an excellent season which has seen both Scott and his older brother Owen, travel to Sweden, Austria, Switzerland and Australia to compete against some of the best in the world.

Scott’s father Kevin Johns, who is Managing Director of Prime Accountants Group, which is based in Homer Road, Solihull, and has offices in Coventry and Birmingham, was delighted to see his son earn selection for Team GB.

He said: “The family are really happy for Scott and this selection is reward for his hard work and dedication this season. My older son Owen has always skied and Scott followed in his brother’s footsteps from a young age.

“We first took him to the Snowdome in Tamworth aged four. When he was eight, he competed in his first alpine race in Bormio, Italy, and has featured on numerous podiums ever since.

“Prime has supported Scott, and Owen, throughout their skiing careers and the whole team were over the moon when we told them about Scott’s selection and everyone wishes him the best of luck.”

Scott has long established himself as a promising talent in the sport, which was highlighted earlier this year when he became England alpine Super G champion.

Scott now competes in Ski Cross, which sees four skiers start at the same time and race over a one-kilometre course which tests all of the skiers’ skills, including turns of different types and sizes, along with jumps of varying size.

It’s in this discipline which he will compete at the Youth Olympics, which take place in Lausanne, also known as the “Olympic Capital”, in the French-speaking region of Vaud, Switzerland, from Thursday, January 9 to Wednesday, January 22.

The games will host 81 different events, across 16 disciplines in eight sports and it is anticipated 1,880 athletes will compete from more than 70 countries.
