Should your organisation apply for cyber essentials accreditation?

One major caveat that comes with technological developments in online spaces is the looming threat of cyberattacks. Hackers and cyber-spies are all able to hide behind the anonymity of a computer screen. Hence the need for cybersecurity measures. We previously wrote about ‘Cybersecurity and Technology: How to Protect Your Business’ with a number of do-it-yourself options like password management, security policy changes, and cybersecurity training among team members. However, since no one is exempt from cyberattacks, the government has introduced a scheme to help protect organisations of varying sizes: Cyber Essentials Accreditation.

Government action

In the UK Government’s efforts to make conducting online business safer, they stressed the need for Cyber Essentials Accreditation. Having an accreditation badge on your organisation’s website shows that you’re prioritising data privacy and are aware of the implications if you don’t. It quite metaphorically acts as a shield against potential threats or anyone with the intent of wreaking havoc on your organisation. Cyber Essentials Accreditation is also now a pre-requisite to applying for government contracts.

A legal requirement

The General Data Protection Regulation requires that all businesses secure third party data whether or not they are current clients. Industry specialists Special Counsel further reinforce this idea by underlining the importance of having a powerful IT infrastructure. Organisations should do what they can to protect the sensitive information they hold by entrusting it to a third party so that they can focus on other, more pressing legal matters when necessary. Additionally, Cyber Essentials Accreditation provides clients, customers, and all other stakeholders, peace of mind in knowing that their data is safe.

Forward-thinking

If you have plans of growing your business, getting Cyber Essentials Accreditation is a must. It could be daunting, however, for smaller organisations because it can be quite pricey, but this is a necessary component if you wish to grow your company. The costs of attacks could also take a toll on your reputation and credibility. The accreditation will give you leverage against your competitors as it shows the legitimacy of your organisation. Because it is nationally recognised, UK citizens will feel comfortable knowing that their data will be secure with your company. This could even attract more customers to your business. In doing so, you may not only gain a following, but also save money. Preventing attacks before they even see the light of day can save you lots of added costs on insurance, as you will be able to lower your premiums. And it is always better to be safe than sorry.
