Event Cup Solutions, operators of the successful, sustainable ONE Planet ONE Chance® Reusable Cup system, has signed a long-term lease on an industrial unit in East London, where it will establish a further national wash centre to further reduce emissions as the business moves from strength to strength.
The 10,000 sq ft facility in Crayford will have the capacity to wash, dry and store up to 50 million reusable cups and food packaging items for distribution around the capital, in-keeping with the business’ Climate Partner pledge.
The business was awarded ClimatePartner Certified status last year having met a series of steps within a climate action strategy to demonstrate that the carbon impact of operations through the manufacturing and supply chain has been analysed, reduced and offset, with the company financing several global climate action initiatives.
Further to its policy of continuing to analyse and offset its carbon emissions, the business identified the need to establish another UK wash centre to operate in addition to its existing centres in Middlesbrough, West Bromwich and Feltham, in order to best serve its London clients.
The centre, which will be operational from April, is now being kitted out with state-of-the-art Meiko MiQ machines, custom-built to Event Cup Solutions’ specification, which wash up to 10,000 cups and food packaging items an hour and feature extended drying and final cooling processes to ensure a moisture-free finish.
The launch coincides with the business securing a three-year contract with the O2.
Managing Director of Event Cup Solutions, John Reeves, said: “Ever since we launched in 2019, we have been committed to both educating visitors to a host of UK venues about the volume of single use waste and helping to reduce it, and to assessing our own carbon outputs to ensure that we take whatever steps are necessary to minimise it.
“Since being awarded Climate Partner status last year, we are particularly careful to evaluate this, and having recognised that 85 per cent of our carbon output is due to logistics we identified the need to invest in another centre to service all of our London clients.
“We were particularly motivated to do this further to the publication on the Julie’s Bicycle report on reusable cups in indoor venues, which we are proud to say we were fully compliant with. As one of the key observations in the report was that the lowest impact solution for such models is to wash cups offsite at a facility within 50km of a venue in order to avoid the emissions from transporting cups outweighing the benefits of the centre itself, we wanted to ensure that we met that requirement to further enhance our own green credentials,” he added.
Event Cup Solutions recently reached agreement with Compass Levy and AEG on a three-year agreement to supply two of London’s most iconic indoor venues, The O2 Arena and Hammersmith Apollo meaning both venues are now completely aligned to the Julies Bicycle report.
