Public safety notice: Reports of large unidentified animal across London

Authorities are investigating a possible link to recent deaths.

Members of the public are being advised to exercise caution following a number of reports concerning an unusually large, unidentified animal in several areas of London.

Over the past several days, sightings have been reported across Hampstead Heath, Saxe-coburg Square, Upper Swandam Lane, Brixton Road and Norwood.

Descriptions vary, however several witnesses have independently reported seeing a large, dark-coloured animal resembling a hound or dog. In some cases, witnesses have described the animal as significantly larger than a typical domestic dog, with an unnatural, ‘glowing’ aura.

Reports have primarily occurred during the evening and early hours of the morning.

At present, there is insufficient information to confirm the species of the animal or whether the reported sightings relate to the same animal.

Inspector Lestrade says “At this stage, the deaths remain under investigation. No conclusions have been reached regarding any possible connection.”

Public speculation has linked the sightings to seven alleged deaths, the most recent involving Kirk Shanton, 41, an artist’s model and keen horticulturist from Regent’s Square.

Anyone who encounters an unfamiliar large animal is advised to:

  • Keep a safe distance. Do not attempt to approach, feed or photograph the beast at close range.

  • Keep children and domestic animals away from the area.

  • Avoid attempting to corner or follow the animal.

  • Where safe to do so, make a note of the location, time and direction in which the animal was travelling.

  • Report any unusual behaviour or further sightings.

Members of the public are also advised to remain particularly alert when walking through parks, poorly lit streets and other quiet areas after dark.

Commenting on the reports, consulting detective Sherlock Holmes said: “At this stage, there is not enough evidence to draw any firm conclusions. However, the consistency of several independent accounts is worth noting. Anyone who believes they have seen the animal should avoid approaching it and record the time, location and direction of travel as accurately as possible.”

Holmes is understood to be reviewing the reported sightings and any available witness accounts.

Anyone who believes they have encountered the animal is encouraged to record the time, location and circumstances of the sighting.

Further information will be issued should it become necessary.

This notice forms part of a fictional theatrical campaign for The Lost Estate’s The Great Murder Mystery, inspired by The Hound of the Baskervilles.
