Pelorus announces sustainable business blueprint in partnership with World Land Trust

This month, experiential travel company, Pelorus announces a business blueprint for the future, in partnership with World Land Trust (WLT) with a plan in place to carbon balance its emissions from January 2020. For Pelorus’ Founders – Jimmy Carroll and Geordie Mackay-Lewis – the very essence of experiential travel is to explore the abundant beauty of the natural world and create life-enriching journeys that are rooted in meaning and purpose. But with this desire to explore, comes responsibility.

Pelorus’ mission statement outlines its goal to achieve ambitious, industry leading targets in sustainability, to continually seek to minimise its impact on the environment and to ensure sustainable futures for the landscapes and wildlife that the team are so passionate about. These aspirations are aligned to the UN Sustainability Goals and recognise the global challenges that will define the next era of luxury travel.

Since Pelorus was founded in 2017, the company has forged a meaningful partnership with World Land Trust. From 2020, funds will be raised through obligatory client contributions from every Pelorus trip undertaken, calculated by WLT’s carbon calculator, which factors in international flights, in country transfers and accommodation emissions. In addition, Pelorus will provide top up contributions from the revenue of each trip to further enhance the positive effects of their client’s experiences. Alongside this, Pelorus will balance its business footprint, offsetting all employee travel and office emissions. These funds will be distributed through WLT’s Carbon Balanced programme that supports its local NGO partners in land purchase initiatives, conservation reserve management and ecosystem restoration projects. These are long-lasting programmes that help to restore threatened habitats, with current initiatives ongoing in Guatemala and Vietnam.

Geordie Mackay Lewis comments “We are in the privileged position of having access to a diverse network of individuals, many of whom occupy positions of power and responsibility and we want to work with them to be a driver of change. By using our expertise to enable these individuals to travel to, and connect with, parts of the world that are truly remarkable, we are able to powerfully promote the protection of endangered environments and species to individuals with the capacity to make significant change to the future of our planet. Whilst we recognise that offsetting through WLT’s Carbon Balanced Programme will not end climate change, it is a measure we take to reduce our impact on the environment.”

Pelorus has also begun the process of auditing the business itself, as well as all of its suppliers in order to ensure there is an ethic of shared values and efforts across the board. This will take the form of a Supplier’s Agreement that must show tangible evidence of responsible business practices, thereby allowing Pelorus to align themselves to partners that share their vision for the future. Internally at Pelorus, all business trips will be evaluated by a dedicated sustainability focused employee to ensure trips are not taken unnecessarily and travel plans are streamlined for efficiency.

PELORUS offers private adventures from £5,000 per person for a group of four guests.
