Next generation of Staffordshire beekeepers is set to get buzzing as bookings open for new courses

Ever thought about keeping bees but weren’t sure where to start? Then South Staffordshire and District Beekeepers’ Association is now taking bookings for its 2026 Beginning Beekeeping Course.

The six-week course, which will run on Saturday mornings throughout May and June 2026, offers a practical and hands-on introduction to the fascinating world of honeybees and honey production.

Course participants explore hives and colony life with experienced beekeepers

Participants can join the course at either The National Trust’s Shugborough Hall Estate in Great Haywood or the Forest of Mercia site at Hilton Green, Essington, with sessions limited to 15 participants at each site.

Open to anyone with an interest in honeybees, pollination, and getting their own honey, learners will gain confidence in handling live colonies by working alongside and learning from experienced beekeepers.

Course perfect for people enthusiastic to protect “crucial pollinators”

Association president Mrs Wendy Woodward said: “This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of beekeeping in a relaxed and supportive environment.

“Whether you’re looking for a new hobby or you’d like to do your bit for local biodiversity, this course is a great place to begin.

“No previous experience is needed, just a curiosity and enthusiasm to protect these fascinating and crucial pollinators.”

Course to include a bonus honey extraction session for 2026.

The courses, which usually sells out, begins with inductions on Saturday, May 16, 2026, followed by six consecutive sessions from May 30 to July 4, and, new for 2026, the chance to attend a bonus honey extraction demonstration later in the summer.

On completing the course, participants will have the chance to start their own beekeeping adventure by purchasing a colony of bees bred by the association.

Courses can be purchased as gifts for loved ones, including for Christmas. To book your place visit https://southstaffsbeekeepers.com/beginning-beekeeping-course/.
