A £900,000 investment into communities supported by Newcastle United Foundation has been granted through the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (North East LEP) to help build state-of-the-art facility NUCASTLE.
The official charity arm of Newcastle United first released plans in 2017 to create an accessible and inclusive hub, providing a purpose-built space which seamlessly integrates learning, recreation, exercise and community work in the city.
North East LEP’s financial backing – along with support from 20 key investors from the public and private sector, as well as individuals – has seen demolition work begin at the site of the former Murray House recreational centre in Newcastle’s West End last month, following years of planning and fundraising.
Newcastle United Foundation is one of 18 schemes to receive funding support through the North East LEP via the Government’s Getting Britain Building Fund.
While the figure is ring-fenced for capital only, the sum will also support the Foundation in launching NU Futures – a programme to be housed in the new building to transform the way young people transition from education to careers, using community outreach to target thousands of schoolchildren and young people across the North of Tyne.

Shovel-ready schemes receiving a share of the £47m Government grant are set to help regenerate towns and city centres in the North East, as well as boosting employment by creating around 2,200 new jobs to improve the economy.
North East LEP supports projects with partners across six specific areas, focusing on business growth, innovation, skills, employment, inclusion and progression, transport connectivity, investment and infrastructure and policy, strategy and research.
Andrew Moffat, Chair of the North East LEP Investment Board, said: “The Getting Building Fund is designed to stimulate construction activity and develop new infrastructure, helping to spur economic recovery and to create jobs.
“This £8m capital project from the Newcastle United Foundation will do this by transforming a brownfield site near to the football ground with a new three-storey building offering an exciting range of health, employment and sporting facilities to help raise aspirations and support young people to thrive.”
The Foundation aims to open the doors of its new home for the community to enjoy in March 2022.
Participants, staff and visitors will be able to access a spectacular 4G rooftop pitch offering views of St. James’ Park, innovative classrooms, high-tech digital hub, four-court sports hall, smart fitness suite and accessible changing areas, event and meeting spaces and open-plan offices at the three-story hub.
